Should You Replace Your AC and Furnace at the Same Time?

Should You Replace Your AC and Furnace at the Same Time

Your AC limped through summer, struggling to keep you cool. You know it’s time to replace your AC unit before the HVAC busy season hits, but should you go ahead and replace your furnace at the same time? For over 30 years, Action Air has been the HVAC leader in Central Indiana – providing the highest quality service possible to homeowners. Today, the experts at Action Air will give you the knowledge and confidence to answer whether you should replace your AC and furnace at the same time.

1. Age is a Determiner When You Replace Your AC and Furnace

It’s important to remember that your AC and furnace have very different lifespans. If your air conditioner is properly maintained, you can expect the unit to last about 10-15 years. Your furnace could last double that. A cared furnace that is cared for will last about 15-30 years on average. It makes sense to replace your AC and furnace together if your furnace is over 15 years old. Keep in mind that if your furnace is 10 years or older, it still might make financial sense to replace both. A new furnace replaced at the same time as the AC is roughly half what it’d cost to replace it separately.

2. Buying a High-efficiency AC

If you purchase a new high-efficiency air conditioner with a SEER (cooling efficiency) rating above 16, it’s probably a good idea to move forward with a new furnace as well. If your new AC has a SEER of 16 or above but the furnace has an older model blower fan, the system will be mismatched – meaning your new high-efficiency AC could lose much of its efficiency. In which case, it makes sense to replace both at the same time.

3. Difficult to Reach

If you live in an area that is difficult to get to, or your furnace is difficult to reach because of where it is on the property, then replacing both the furnace and the AC at the same time is a good idea. It’s no secret that one of the main factors contributing to the cost is the difficulty of the work. If the furnace is hard to reach, placed in a position that requires extra time or manpower, then it makes financial sense to replace the AC and furnace at the same time.

4. Peace of Mind

If you want the peace of mind that comes from knowing your HVAC system is good for at least 10-15 years, then it makes perfect sense to replace both the AC and furnace at the same time. This is especially true if you’re thinking about retiring soon and know you’ll be on a fixed income. Many people just want the serenity that comes from having a completely new HVAC system and not having to worry about anything but routine maintenance.

At the end of the day, the decision is yours to make. The fact is – while it doesn’t always make sense to replace the AC and furnace at the same time – more often than not, it does.
